THE Philippine Under-23 Football Team failed to obtain a win on their second outing in the ongoing 26th Southeast Asian Games after they bowed to Timor Leste yesterday, 2-1 at the Lebak Bulus Stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia.
It was the second straight loss for the Philippine’s U-23 squad, who also suffered a 1-3 upset against Vietnam on Thursday despite being ahead by 1-nil at the break.
Timor Leste, a better side, took the lead in the early 17th minute on a Murilo Rebeira score on the mouth of the goal.
But 20 minutes later, Fil-Am OJ Porteria equalized the match in the 37th minute off a cross from Fil-German Patrick Hinrichsen from the left side for a 1-all halftime score.
However, in the resumption of the game, the Timorese came out quick on a counter as Diogo Santos restoring the lead in the 48th minute after beating Hinrichsen on the left flank and striking the ball past Fil-German keeper Roland Muller.
The Filipinos tried to even the score with Fil-Spanish Carli Olaivar de Murga, Fil-German Manny Ott and Fil-Dutch Jason de Jong invading the dangerous zone but the athleticism of Timorese keeper Emerson Carlos and the tight defense of their back four foiled the nationals’ attempts.
Timor now topped the Group B with 6 points, followed by Vietnam and Myanmar with 4 points apiece. Brunei and Laos, which both lost their opening-day matches, will be playing tonight.
The U-23 squad hopes to end their winning drought when they face Laos on Friday. JEROME S. GALUNAN JR.
