SP APPROVES MOTOR RACING ORDINANCE

SPM CARL VALDERAMA LOPEZ

IN order to provide legal avenues to promote safe and responsible driving among the racing enthusiasts as well as to further promote the tourism industry in Bacolod City, the Sangguniang Panlunsod last December 1, 2011 passed the ordinance promoting and legalizing motor racing in Bacolod and declaring the month of September as Motor Racing Month.

The ordinance, authored by Councilor Carlos Jose Lopez and co-authored by Councilor Al Victor Espino, stressed that illegal motor racing is rampant among the youth today so there is a need to closely monitor these activities and provide places where they can display their skills.

“We can’t deny that racing exists in many main streets of Bacolod and even in nearby city of Talisay. So in order to provide these racers legal venues to compete thus we pushed for this ordinance,” Lopez yesterday explained.

Moreover, Lopez cited that there are no regular racing events are being held in the Visayas and Mindanao regions unlike in Manila and Luzon wherein there are lots of racing competitions held. “Many racing groups, including those from Manila, had expressed intention of promoting racing events in the city. And with this ordinance, we will able to promote more events as well as generate additional revenue for the city. More participants, more visitors to avail the services of our hotels and restaurants,” Lopez said.

Meanwhile, the said motor racing ordinance does not only focus on auto/car racing but includes flatboat racing, truck racing, and motorcycle racing, among others.

“I am looking forward that every month should have a certain event to further promote the tourism industry as well as create more revenue and employment for the city,” Lopez concluded. /JSG
