FORTY-eight schools are up to compete in this year’s 16th Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) – University Games on October 22- 29 in Roxas City, Capiz.
The opening ceremony takes place at 5 p.m. at the Capiz Gym with PSC chairman Richie Garcia as the guest of honor.
The said schools are registered to vie in 14 disciplines including athletic, tennis, swimming, badminton, table tennis, taekwondo, beach volleyball, billiards, chess and sepak takraw.
Backed anew by the PSC, the UniGames has been included among the agency’s grassroots sports program.
The event has been improving the quality of competition among schools, attracting notable teams like Ateneo, La Salle, University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas and San Beda, to name a few.
“We are very grateful to the PSC for its continuous recognition and support to the UniGames. The PSC’s support has enabled us to make this league grow,” said UniGames president Roger Banzuela.
However, Banzuela noted that lack of players in billiards impeded the discipline to push through in the weeklong tournament.
Schools, particularly those in the provinces, have not included billiards in their varsity sports program but the PSC requested the UniGames officials to include the event in this year’s competition.
