2ND GOVERNOR’S CUP SLUGFEST OPENS TOMORROW AT NOMPAC

IT will be the “best of the best” competition among local pugs when the 2nd Governor’s Cup Boxing Tournament opens tomorrow, 1 p.m., at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center.

Angel Verdeflor, Executive Assistant to the Governor for Sports, yesterday said an opening ceremony, with Amateur Basketball Association of the Philippines executive director Ed Picson as guest, will usher this year’s showdown among the best boxers in the province.

Verdeflor said the participants in the 17 weight categories, were all winners in the inter-LGU tournament held separately in the six congressional districts of Negros Occidental.

“Those who will compete were already winners in their town during the inter-barangay tournament held earlier,” Verdeflor said.

Given these talents, we are assured of seeing the best boxers competing against each other, thus, giving our local boxing program a big boost, he added.

Contingent from the first district will be led by pugs from San Carlos City, who won in the inter-LGU showdown in their area, while Sagay City boxers from the second district are expected to show off their skills against their counterparts from the other districts in the province.

Third district pugs will be lead by an elite selection of champion boxers from the towns of Murcia, EB Magalona and the cities of Victorias, Silay and Talisay, while Bago City boxers banner the contingent from the fourth district.

Himamaylan boxers will take the lead for the fifth district while the winners in the inter-LGU competition in the sixth district will try to pull off a surprise in the three-day competition.

Meanwhile, Verdeflor told the DAILY STAR yesterday said that the London-based football club, led by brothers James and Ryan Hall, will arrive today in Bacolod City for a series of friendly matches against local clubs.

The visiting team from London is composed of first division players and they will hold camp at the Panaad Park and Stadium, where they will also stay until the first week of November, Verdeflor said.

They will play their first game against Bacolod United Football Club on October 24, against San Carlos City FC on October 27, against Sagay City FC on October 31, and against Ceres Football Club on November 3, he added.*NAB
