BASKETBALL is indeed the country’s No.1 sports as local basketball enthusiasts continue to take great efforts to further strengthen the discipline at the local level.
Last weekend, the Your Basketball Athletic Club (YBAC) opened their 1st Conference 2011-2012 Unity Cup at the West Negros University gym with four teams vying for the top honors namely: Champu Salon, Crismar, Fiesta Gas and Phoenix Oil.
In the opening matches, Champu Salon and Crismar posted wins over their respective opponents.
Rolly Buenaflor poured a total of 24 points as Mario Reyes hit 16 to rally Champu to a 96-89 come from behind victory over Fiesta Gas.
Fiesta was leading the game at the half, 43-37 when Buenaflor was joined by Reyes and Cirilo Soquiña in the third quarter run to end the period on top, 71-66. Soquiña sunk 10 points of his 13 in the quarter, counting a pair of triples, to spark Champu’s offense.
It was only Ernie Castillo who was the lone offensive threat in that quarter when he fired 10 points as Lito Ramos contributed 6 points.
In the playoff period, Buenaflor continued to sizzle as he converted 7 points, including a triple as Soquiña and Inocencio ‘Nonoy’ Tan fired a trey each to give Champu some breathing space towards the final buzzer.
Backing Buenaflor and Reyes in Champu’s offense were Soquiña with 13 points, Tan with 11, Joenel Anico 10 and Nelson Sia Co with 7 points.
Meanwhile, Castillo led Fiesta gas with 21 as Bong Ibe finished with 17 points while Mayo Salazar and Paul Fernandez with 10 apiece, Oscar Aquino with 9 points and Ramos 6.
In the other game, Crismar outplayed Phoenix down the stretch to book a 75-68 win.
Crismar shot 28 points in the third quarter to equalize the match at 51-all at the end of the period after trailing behind, 33-23 at the break.
RJ Pendon, Rene Villacanas and Gershon Sipe scored 8 points each to lead the third period run as Edwin Duterte sunk 10 points to keep Phoenix n the game.
But in the fourth quarter, Crismar was able to hold Duterte scoreless as Crismar got its balance offense from Pendon, Villacanas, Sipe and Edmund Inventor.
Pendon anchored Crismar with 18 as Sipe hit 14, Villacanas 12, Inventor 9 and Ian Locsin with 6 points.
